dear diary,
golf is a fickle game. one day i shoot my best round ever and come within inches of making an eagle from 130 yards with my wedge, and just 3 days later i end up shooting a horrendous score on my round for my league.
i dream of the day that i can consistently produce the shots i know i can hit. for an entire round, several times a week.
i guess i just need some practice....

p.s. eden is back in town for a meetup tonight! my life will be complete once i see her again...
lovingly sent from eden. i do it for all you lovely ladies out there.
p.s. i've got good news...
dear diary,
on my way to work this morning, i came across something strange. i drive through a school zone and i'm used to seeing the crossing guard lady standing in the middle of the road with her flag out to let the kids cross the street.
today was no different. except it was. there were no kids crossing the street (or even in the vicinity). and she was standing in the middle of the street.
she was standing next to a car, talking with the driver. and laughing. for over a minute. all while me and 14 other cars were stopped at the green light waiting for her to move so we could go.

at the beginning of 2008, i provided a list of goals i had for the year. here is the second update, for the end of april, that reports my progress so far.
setup a 529 account for my daughter (complete!)
this goal is complete and currently on "auto-pilot". - max out my roth ira contributions
i am waiting until july to make my first contribution per the advice of the manager of my roth ira. - maintain a $2000 emergency fund savings
the economic stimulus plan payment will be going towards this and will put me just over halfway there. - increase my net worth by 50%
surprisingly, april was a good month. i increased my net worth by 4.34%. i also reached a mini-milestone for my overall total net worth, which has nearly doubled since i started keeping track back in june of 2006. so far, for 2008, it's gone up 7.47%. - cut my outstanding debt by 50%
i've pretty much only been able to cut the standard 2% each month off credit card debt. i had to make some minimum payments at the end of the month due to poor timing of my cash flow. - lose 35 pounds
i took part in a wellness quiz at work and was told that for my height (6'), i should weigh between 136 and 183 pounds. that sounds ridiculous to me. i'm guessing if i can get to 190-195, i'll be fine. i'm currently around 203. - exercise at least twice per week
i've been golfing 2 or 3 times a week and also playing soccer once a week. when golfing, i've been walking and choosing the hillier of the two courses when i go. i also walk at work a couple times a week at lunch. - join a golf club
i became a member two weeks ago and have already played enough golf to equal about 20% of the membership fee. not too shabby! - take golf lessons
the learning center at the club i belong to is supposed to open in mid-may. i hope to take some lessons then. - create a book of erie photographs
i'm fine tuning my selections and starting to work on some organization of the photos. i'm still not sure about the layout or format of the book. - bring in at least $1000 in donations for parents of autistic children
the golf tournament is coming up and i've managed to get one team together (my own). that will account for $400, bringing my total to $450. i plan on getting one more team together and hopefully a couple sponsors for the tournament. - enroll in the erie ambassador program (on hold)
i've received the application for the fall program, and plan on filling it out shortly. i hoped to take care of this in their spring program, but classes currently conflict with my soccer schedule. remodel my basement into livable space
i've pretty much given up on this for now. there's just not enough money or time to work on this. i am going to try and clean it up a little bit and organize my woodworking tools, but that will be just about it. - bring in $10k from freelance jobs and photography
this has been going along steadily, which is surprising. later this week i will be blogging about my fantastic news from april. just waiting for the bank wire transfer to clear! - become a microsoft certified developer
i haven't done anything with this lately at all. although, some funds at work just became available for training. perhaps i'll see if there's a course or book i could get.
it's that time of year again. time to donate to the "help ron buy a new set of golf clubs" fund.
why would you want to donate to the "help ron buy a new set of golf clubs" fund?
- because ron just broke the head off two golf clubs in his last round of golf (thursday evening). (picture
forthcoming below)
- because ron just spent a good chunk of money becoming a member to a golf club
- because the 2008 golf season is only just underway and lots of golf is yet to be played
- because ron's current set is several years old and needs updating
- because ron now does not have a 5- or 6-iron
- because you like ron
- because ron is awesome
so how does one break two golf clubs in one round?
- was it an outburst of anger due to poor golfing? no
- was it due to hard ground? no
- was it due to a miss hit? no
- was it due to a perfectly good shot and a freak accident? yes
the 5-iron broke when punching out from behind a tree and caught me by surprise. i looked at the ground afterwards and saw no divot, no tree roots, nothing. i chalked it up as a freaky accident.

then, i tee up on a 179 yard par 3, and use my 6-iron and hit a nice shot and the same exact thing happens. i look at the ground again and what do i see? nothing. the tee still in the ground as is, no divot, nothing.
the clubs broke in the same exact manner, clean breaks right at the end of the hosel. any ideas why?
